GreenSight and Tech Defenders Launch Pilot for Software-Based Cosmetic Condition Grading in ITAD Operations

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — GreenSight and Tech Defenders announced the launch of a pilot program to deploy GreenSight's cosmetic condition grading technology within Tech Defenders' ITAD facility in Michigan.

The pilot introduces a photo-based cosmetic condition grading workflow designed to standardize how consumer electronics are evaluated during data erasure and refurbishment. Using GreenSight's system, technicians can capture up to five images of a device and receive a consistent cosmetic grade on an A–F scale, reducing subjectivity and minimizing the need for manual documentation.

Standardizing Grading Across Teams

Cosmetic condition grading is a critical input to resale value, client trust, and downstream returns, yet grading practices often vary based on individual experience and interpretation. The GreenSight pilot focuses on embedding grading standards directly into the application, allowing operations managers to define the criteria and terminology used for each grade. This enables organizations to apply consistent grading standards across technicians, devices, and shifts, regardless of tenure or prior grading experience.

Because grading definitions are managed centrally, operations teams can update or refine standards directly within the system as needs evolve, without relying on manual process updates or internal memos. This helps ensure grading remains consistent over time while allowing organizations to adapt without disrupting day-to-day workflows.

Faster, More Consistent Grading

By shifting grading to an automated, image-driven workflow, technicians are no longer required to manually describe or interpret every visible cosmetic issue. Instead, grading becomes faster, more consistent, and easier to execute, helping teams stay focused on throughput while maintaining clear, repeatable standards.

Centralized Quality Oversight

In parallel, GreenSight enables centralized review through a web-based platform where supervisors and operations managers can assess device images, grades, and supporting rationales remotely. This allows quality oversight to occur from the comfort of their desks, without requiring physical movement to the warehouse floor, expanding visibility while fitting naturally into existing workflows.

GreenSight also provides a professional, client-facing grading rationale for each device, helping ITAD operators clearly explain cosmetic outcomes and reduce disputes tied to missing context, inconsistencies, or subjective interpretation.

“The rationale feels enterprise... and I really like it.”

— Mark, General Manager at Tech Defenders

Pilot Objectives

The pilot is designed to:

  • Reduce the time required to complete cosmetic condition grading
  • Standardize grades across technicians, devices, and time
  • Lower the training barrier for new and seasonal staff
  • Expand quality oversight through centralized, image-based review
  • Provide clear and professional grading rationales that support client trust
  • Prove grading consistency through a standardized, image-driven workflow

The pilot focuses exclusively on cosmetic condition grading for consumer electronics and does not alter or replace existing functionality testing processes. Results from the pilot will be used to evaluate grading efficiency, consistency, and scalability, informing potential future deployments as part of GreenSight's broader strategy to deliver operational intelligence to the ITAD industry.
